Portugal coach Paulo Bento slams 'unpleasant' criticism of captain Cristiano Ronaldo

The Real Madrid star was jeered on by his own supporters in the weekend's 1-0 win over Norway and the coach was disappointed by the treatment of former Manchester United man

Portugal coach Paulo Bento has launched a strong defence of Cristiano Ronaldo in the wake of criticism levelled against his captain during the recent win against Norway.

Sections of the Estadio da Luz jeered the Real Madrid man's touches in a display which was described as 'completely unfair' by the trainer.

A goal from Helder Postiga seven minutes into the second half proved enough to secure victory in the Euro 2012 qualifier, but Bento feels that Ronaldo should be offered more appreciation in his leading role for the national side.

"I feel that the booing of Cristiano Ronaldo is completely unfair and is very unpleasant behaviour from the fans. However, these kinds of things have apparently become part of our profession," Bento said to SIC Noticias.

"Cristiano has been a great captain and is an example to follow for the other players. He makes life so much easier for me as the coach. He deserves more respect and he should be treated as the great player who he is."

Portugal climbed to joint first spot in the table of their Euro 2012 qualifying group and have now collected 10 points from their five matches.
